What’s happening in May?
Suddenly our booking sheets for May have all but filled up. There are zebras in the thousands around Kenya’s Mara Nyika, and I don’t think I have ever had a better game drive at ol Donyo Lodge than the one I had last week, with herds of 100 or so Fringe Eared Oryx everywhere. One Ton, the large tusker elephant, visited the brand new waterhole, and lions roared right in camp on our last night. Our Hidecam is also back online so check it out to see the improvements to the waterhole.
In Southern Africa (and elsewhere around the world), it was Mother’s Day last weekend, and later this week, it is a terribly important World Cocktail Day. I wonder if the Southern African mothers aligned their day to this on purpose. As travel opens up, it is probably appropriate to celebrate our families and mothers and to raise a glass to surviving the ‘storm’.
This week our team offers another cocktail idea for you. We would like to invite you to send us your cocktail ideas to incorporate into camps and our new book on cuisine that we have in the works for release later this year.
Life must be about embracing success and fun, family and the future. It has to be about soaking up the leopards, reflecting on the last remaining big tusker elephants in the world, and giving them space and respect.
Join me this weekend for a cocktail,
Dereck Joubert
TO CELEBRATE WORLD COCKTAIL DAY TODAY AND THE RECENT OPENING OF TEMBO PLAINS CAMP, WE PRESENT TO YOU…
THE TEMBO TIPPLE!
“We were inspired to make something cooling with a fruity taste, and the refreshing aspect of the cucumber gives it a nice smooth taste. The grapefruit also gives a punch to the cocktail.”
– MC, Tembo Plains Camp
The recipe has been carefully created by the team led by MC, a waiter at Tembo Plains Camp, from the banks of the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe, using Great Plains’ signature ‘Ra Di Tau’ Gin (Father of Lions), released earlier this year.
HOW TO MAKE THE TEMBO TIPPLE
- Two tots of Great Plains Ra Di Tau Gin
- 180mls Indian tonic
- Splash of Pellegrini bitters
- A slice of grapefruit
- A slice of cucumber
- Ice
Enjoy!
For a non-alcoholic version, simply remove the gin and add an extra squeeze of grapefruit.
We would love to see your creations!
